Volunteer Work Day

Neighborhood Parks Volunteer Work Day

The Neighborhood Parks Volunteer Work Day started in October 2007 as a way to encourage pride and participation in caring for your local neighborhood parks and to educate youth about environmental stewardship.  Each quarter, a different project is chosen for neighbors to turn out and perform volunteer activities.  Activities may include: mulching playgrounds, education about litter prevention, naming of trees, plants, insects, or birds; constructing trashcan stands; painting; or even planting flowers or trees.  These activities are then logged along with the City’s many other yearly beautification and volunteer events with our grant applications through Keep Texas Beautiful.

Our work day then is not just a litter pick-up, recycling, or beautification event, but an overall effort to clean, maintain, create, and improve our parks using residents as the driving force.  Along the way, we hope you will learn and spread the word about taking care of the environment and more specifically, that piece of nature that is closest to you:  your neighborhood park and green space.

Events will be held quarterly.  Along with residents, the City may provide volunteers from boards and commissions such as Keep Lake Jackson Beautiful, or the Youth Advisory Commission, as well as occasionally providing a paid employee at each event for safety, security, and supplies or heavy equipment work.

Volunteers of all ages are needed for weeding, painting, trimming, cleaning or mulching of playgrounds, insect and/or bird identification, planting and other potential activities.
