Why do I need a permit to do construction work on my own home?
The purpose of permits and inspections are to provide a level of safety for you and your neighbors by meeting minimum requirements to protect property, health, and provide structural, electrical and sanitary facilities that are safe.

Are you allowed to have a carport on your property in LJ?
Yes.  However, carports are required to meet the Zoning Requirements as it relates to where the carport is going to be placed and as it relates to the property lines.  

Can I put a utility building in the easement along the back property line?
No.  Utility easements are reserved for use of the utilities companies like HL&P, Entex, Time Warner, etc.

How long will it take to process my permit?
Residential permits - Generally two working days, depending upon the complexity of the project.  Commercial permits - Generally ten working days, again, depending on the complexity of the project.

What kind of projects require a permit?
Any time there is work done on the structure, electric, or plumbing fixtures of a building or home.  Utility buildings, fences, patios, carports, electrical upgrade, sewer line repairs and additions to name a few.  Please contact the building permit department at (979) 415-2430 before beginning a project to see if a permit is required
