The legislative and governing body of the City of Lake Jackson consists of a mayor and (5) councilmen known as the “Council of the City of Lake Jackson”.
The mayor and city council are elected to office at large. When an elected official is "elected at large" that means that they are elected by the entire body of voters rather than by individual seats districts or positions.
There are (5) council positions and they are designated Position One, Position Two, Position Three, Position Four and Position Five. Each council position constitutes a separate office. A candidate for the office of councilman is elected only to the council position for which they have filed for candidacy. Every qualified voter within the city can vote on a candidate for each council position.
In each even-numbered calendar year a mayor and council person for Position Two and Position Four is elected, and in each odd-numbered year councilmen for Position One, Position Three and Position Five are elected.
The mayor and each councilman will hold the office for which they were elected to for a period of two (2) years until their successor is elected and qualified.
A person who served three (3) terms as a councilmember will be term limited and is not eligible to serve in such office for a period of 18 months at which time that person’s eligibility to serve another three (3) terms for that office will be restored. A person who has served one (1), two (2) or three (3) terms as a councilmember is eligible to serve another three (3) terms as mayor. A person who has served three (3) terms as mayor is not eligible to serve as a councilmember or as mayor thereafter for a period of 18 months at which time that person’s eligibility to serve another three (3) terms in those offices will be restored.
