Bicycle Safety
This program makes bicycle riders aware of certain dangers and the necessity of bicycle laws. Bicycle rodeos may be organized which would consist of obstacle courses, safety inspections, and riders who demonstrate many skills which include balancing, turning, stopping, and signaling. This program can be modified for adults and children of all ages.
Child Fingerprinting & Child Find Program
With the support of local businesses and associations, this program consists of providing a fingerprint kit, at no cost, to the parent and fingerprinting their child. The parents are able to keep a record of their child(s) fingerprints at home. DNA and fingerprint kits are available at the Police Department for a nominal fee.
Disabled Parking Program
In July 1999, the Lake Jackson City Council passed an ordinance authorizing the Police Department to initiate a program that empowers local citizens to enforce disabled parking laws. The program began October 1999, with volunteers from the Lake Jackson Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association. It consists of a 4 hour training session that provides information about the ordinance and Texas Department of Transportation codes concerning disabled parking. The Volunteers are trained to help enforce the disabled parking laws by photographing and documenting violations. The volunteer program is aimed at improving the quality of life for disabled people in our community and education of the public about the needs to comply with the regulations.
Volunteers have no contact with the person violating the parking regulations. The volunteers are provided with a camera to photograph the violation and a form to record the time, date, and license pate of the parking violator. These forms are turned in to the Lake Jackson Police Department. The Department will then perform a license plate check and refer violations to the municipal court. A summons to appear in court will then be issued. Violators of a disabled parking law are subject to a fine.
Explorer Post
This program was developed through the Boy Scouts of America. Explorers are males and females between the ages of 14 and 21 who have completed the eighth grade and are interested in law enforcement. They are taught certain aspects of law enforcement and participate in area competitions using the skills that they have learned.
