Citizen Police Academy

The Citizen Police Academy is a thirty hour block of instruction designed to give the public a working knowledge of the Lake Jackson Police Department.  The course consists of a series of ten classes held each Thursday night from 7:00 - 10:00 p.m.  Each night a different topic will be covered by police personnel and supervisors assigned to the different units of the department.

The goal of the Academy is to provide interested citizens with enough information to dispel suspicions and misconceptions about the police and to increase rapport between the Department and the Community through an educative process.  The slogan of the citizen Police Academy is:  "Better Understanding Through Education."  We believe our officers will, in turn, become more aware of the public's feelings and concerns.  Participants will have the opportunity to personally meet officers throughout the department while providing officers the chance to meet many concerned citizens representing a wide variety of community interests.

The Academy covers such diverse topics as training, communications, criminal investigation and narcotics, with particular emphasis on patrol, the area most often in contact with the public.  Instruction will consist of tours, lectures, demonstrations and hands-on practice.  Each participant will be given the opportunity to ride with a patrol officer during an actual tour of duty.  Members of the Police Staff will be available at the first session and throughout the course, should participants need clarification or further information.

We hope the graduates of the Academy will take their knowledge into the Community, educate others when opportunities arise and make decisions which affect the Police Department and the City with a heightened awareness and improved knowledge.
